About the Artist
Artist Statement
I paint natural scenes and subjects in watercolor, acrylic, and sometimes both. My style has been described as “intuitive,” which I think is accurate because as I paint, I experience a sort of conversation between my creative source or “intuition” and what’s happening on the surface in front of me. I usually have a connection to whatever it is I’m painting…whether it’s a view from a hike, or a particular collection of plants or flowers that I noticed.
When I am out in nature, something will grab my attention… a path leading further into the woods, or sunlight filtering through trees, or flowers in glorious bloom, bending in the wind. I’ll take pictures. Then, back in the studio, the photos serve as a guide.
I focus on expressing the in-the-moment awareness I experienced, with the intention of conveying not only what I saw, but what I felt. Often, these are feelings of awe, gratitude, and appreciation. I use light and shadow, shapes, color and composition as my vocabulary.
In my work, I hope to invite the viewer to share in the wonder I experience both as an artist and as a fellow human.
